The Porsche 942 was a special extended edition of the 928 that was built as a gift to Ferry Porsche on his 75th birthday in 1984. The model is also known as the 928-4. The 942 had a longer wheelbase than the standard 928 production model, including a higher and longer roof over the rear seats. It is an exclusive car because only one example was built specifically for this special occasion.

Unique to this variant of the 928 were the fixed headlights, larger doors, raised roof, electrically adjustable front seats, a car phone, a Blaupunkt stereo, radar-controlled cruise control, and climate control. The bumpers of this version later appeared on the 928. S4, and the 5-liter V8 engine appeared later on the American market.
