Porsche 928 (1977–1995)

De Porsche 928 It was very advanced for its time and was built between 1977 and 1995. Porsche actually planned for the 928 to be the successor to the 911, but enthusiasts thought otherwise, and sales of the 911s simply continued to perform well. The 928 also sold well in the beginning but could not keep up with the 911 and therefore could not replace it. In addition, the car was priced increasingly higher, which did not help either. Eventually, Porsche built only two models per day, and the price was nearly 165.00 DM in 1994, whereas the price in 1977 was 'only' 55.000 DM. Approximately 600 928s are still on the road in the Netherlands.

The model is a special sports coupe in which the water-cooled aluminum V8 is located at the front instead of the rear; furthermore, the gearbox is positioned above the rear axle (transaxle), a practice often used in front-engined cars to achieve better weight distribution. In addition to the engine block, the hood, front fenders, and doors are also made of aluminum. The car housed a considerable amount of electronics, as evidenced by the sheer volume of wiring: 1000 connectors and 3 kilometers (!) of electrical cabling.

The Porsche 928 went from 0 to 100 km/h in 6,6 seconds, and later versions reached a top speed of nearly 300 km/h. In 1978, the model won the title “Car of the Year,” a feat no other sports car has ever achieved.

The rarest Porsche 928

In 1987, Porsche produced five 928 S4 models to CS specifications. These five cars were built for the factory drivers: Jochen Mass, Hans Stuck, Jacky Ickx, Derek Bell, and Bob Wollek. These five cars were prototypes of the CS model introduced in 1988 and are undoubtedly the rarest and most unique versions.

The 928 distinguished itself with its V8 power, ease of use, and innovative design, making it more practical and comfortable than many of its competitors.

The Porsche 928 won the title “European Car of the Year” in 1978, the only time a Porsche received that award. Ironically, this happened while the car was originally intended to replace the 911—a model that is still being built decades later.

The model did not receive a direct successor. Porsche returned to its core model, out of 911, but in a sense, the Porsche Panamera (2009) was seen as the spiritual successor: a luxurious, sporty GT with a front-mounted engine.
