Porsche 550 (1953–1956)

The Rare Porsche 550 (also known as the 550 Spyder) was the first purpose-built sports car constructed by Porsche. This model, too, was not designed by Porsche itself, but by Erwin Komenda. The model was equipped with a four-cylinder 1,5-liter Fuhrmann engine with an overhead camshaft. This produced 110 hp at a weight of 686 kg.

The car was intended to establish Porsche as a serious competitor in international racing, despite the company's limited budget at the time. A number of cars were also produced as a coupé model. The Porsche 550 remained in production until 1956 and was succeeded by the Porsche 718. Today, the Porsche 550 is built as a replica by a few companies.

The success of the Porsche 550

The success of the 550 Spyder began with the chassis and the engine. The car had a rear-wheel-drive 4-cylinder boxer engine that delivered 110 hp. For that time, this was impressive, especially considering the car's low weight. The aluminium body frame and steel ladder chassis ensured exceptional rigidity and a low center of gravity.

All this gave the 550 unparalleled handling, especially in corners and on narrow, challenging circuits.
The car was available in two variants: the original 550 Spyder and the later developed 550A, with improved suspension and slightly more refined performance. Despite the limited power, the car accelerated from 0 to 100 km/h in about 6,5 seconds, with a top speed of approx. 220 km/h, impressive for a car from the early 50s.

Legendary on the racetrack

The 550 Spyder quickly made a name for itself in international motorsport. It won races in the Mille Miglia, the Targa Florio, and the 24 Hours of Le Mans, and soon became the weapon of choice for drivers who valued agility and precision over brute force. The lightweight construction and balanced chassis ensured a driving experience that would still make even modern sports cars envious.

The Porsche 550 Spyder gained extra fame due to its association with James DeanThe young film star bought a 550 Spyder, which he affectionately called “Little Bastard.” Tragically, he died in an accident in 1955 while driving this car. This incidents contributed to the mythical status of the 550 Spyder and made the model legendary outside of motorsport.

With only approximately 90 examples produced, the 550 Spyder is extremely rare and sought after by collectors. Its light weight, pure driving experience, and historical value make it one of the most iconic Porsches of all time.
