The High Speed series included various coupé models, a convertible, and a sedan. Additionally, the Coupé Berlinetta and the Cabriolet Palm Beach also belong to the model family. Coachbuilders Frua and Fissore, among others, produced versions of this model.
The name “High Speed” reflects Monteverdi’s ambition to create a sports car that offered both speed and luxury. The number “375” refers to the power in horsepower, while the letter “L” stands for “Luxury”, emphasizing the focus on comfort and refinement.
History of the Monteverdi High Speed
In 1967, Peter Monteverdi, a Swiss entrepreneur and former Ferrari and Jensen importer, decided to establish his own sports car brand. His goal was to create a luxury GT that combined the precision of Switzerland with the power of American engines. This resulted in the High Speed 375 S, a two-seater coupe designed by the Italian coachbuilder Pietro Frua. Following positive reactions to the 375 S, Monteverdi decided in 1969 to develop the 375 L, a 2+2 coupe with an extended chassis, designed by Carrozzeria Fissore.

The Monteverdi High Speed 375 L was a technical masterpiece. The chassis was constructed from square steel tubes, designed by Monteverdi himself and manufactured by Stahlbau AG in Muttenz, Switzerland. The suspension components came from Alford & Alder of the UK, the rear axle was from Salisbury, the brakes were from Girling, and the steering was provided by ZF.
The power source was a 7,2-liter Chrysler Magnum 440 V8 engine, producing 375 hp and 651 Nm of torque at 3.200 rpm. This engine was paired with either a 3-speed automatic transmission or a 5-speed ZF manual transmission. The drivetrain was rear-wheel, which contributed to the sporty driving experience.
Performance of the High Speed
With a top speed of 230 km/h and a sprint to 100 km/h in just over 8 seconds, the Monteverdi High Speed could compete with rivals such as the Aston Martin V8, Maserati Indy, and the Jensen Interceptor.
