The fourth-generation Cortina had a somewhat more conventional design than its predecessor and was built between 1976 and 1979. Although it was considered by many to be a facelift for the third generation, the Mark IV was actually a Ford Taurus with a Cortina badge, featuring the same interior and running gear.

The Cortina Mark IV replaced the 2000E. In 1977, a large Ford Cologne V6 engine was added to the lineup. The Cortina Mark IV was available as a 2- and 4-door sedan and came with various trim levels.
