In 1994, after 28 years, Alfa Romeo introduced a new version of the Spider. It was launched at the Geneva Motor Show alongside the GTV on which it was based. The Spider was now front-wheel driven with either a 2,0-liter TS or a 3,0-liter V6 engine. The cars were designed by Alfa Romeo's own Centro Stile in collaboration with Pininfarina.

In 1998, this Spider received its first facelift, during which the interior was refreshed, among other things. The second facelift followed in 2003, giving the front end a more modern look by adopting it from the 147. In 2006, this Spider model was succeeded by a model based on the Brera.
